another story -- 193 nations meeting today at the united nations general assembly in new york. but there is one -- one speaker, that's set to take the stage and is certain to spark a bit of controversy. with gadhafi gone perhaps the most controversial figure at this week's united nations general assembly meeting is now iran's president, mahmoud ahmadinejad. he's set to take stage at the u.n., a platform he's used before to spark both outrage and fear. in 2006, he famously denied the holocaust. at colombia university in 2007, he claimed there were in gays in iran. in 2009 he denied the holocaust again causing many u.n. delegates to walk out. and last year, ahmadinejad implied 9/11 could have been an inside job by the united states. but beyond ahmadinejad's words, iran's actions matter to the u.s. because iran proves itself, time and time again, to be a dang dangerous wild card in a volatile region. just in the past year, iran resisted the arab spring, launching attacks on protesters. it was reminiscent of the violent response to iran's green revolution in 2009 when iranians cam

ahmadinejad appearance before the united nations general assembly. it would seem that iran's dealer ins are trying to court favorable public opinion and try to blunt the inevitable criticism they are going to face at the u.n. about the nuclear program and their human rights record. so, that is probably the reason for the timing of the release. now, we do know from the lawyer for the two men that the bail money or ransom money as some called it wasaid, again, bioman, itself. the reason for that is unclear. ohman is, obviously, a long term and important u.s. ally but why they would hand over $1 million is not yet clear. clearly there probably is some quid pro quo in terms of u.s. support and backing for ohman. >>shepard: we don't know what this is all about, in essence? >>jonathan: we don't know the reason for them paying $1 million. they have not acknowledged it. that is what we hear from the lawyers involved in the case and what we understood happened with the release of sarah shourd last year at $500,000. but, there are reasons that remain unknown. >>shepard: president obama saying the

. if there was just a vote -- just needed for a vote in the united nations general assembly, it would overwhelmingly be approved very quickly. to get that full membership as a member state of the united states, you need the security council to approve it. you need nine states, nine members of the u.n. security council, 15 members all together that are ready to support it. you also have to avoid a veto by one of the five permanent members of the u.n. security council. president obama says the u.s. will use that veto. the security council isn't going to authorize full membership for the palestinians but they're trying to avoid that veto if at all possible. >> it seems to me the president has to -- talking about president obama -- he's walking a bit of a fine line here. really, i know you can speak to this, this isn't just a diplomatic issue but this is a domestic issue as well. we have the jewish vote at stake here for president obama and what happened in new york with the election for anthony weiner's seat which had been vacated. what do you make of that? >> well, it's become a huge political issue.
